Four men acquitted in lawyer assault case

On October 22, 2024, Koay Beng Ghee, Teh Eng Tat, Ng Weng Kooi, and Yeoh Ee Seong were charged with causing injury to lawyer Beh Hong Shien using a metal rod. The attack took place at Persiaran Karpal Singh. The four men claimed trial but were acquitted and discharged by magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi. The magistrate ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against them due to contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in their evidence.

CCTV footage showed the assailants wearing masks, making it unsafe to identify the second accused based on the complainant's claim of puffy eyes and prominent eye bags. The magistrate also rejected a witness's identification of an assailant based on body posture observed through a rear-view mirror from several cars away. The CCTV footage did not clearly show the assailants' faces, and clothing seized during the investigation did not match what was seen in the footage.

The magistrate stated that the investigating officer acknowledged this discrepancy during cross-examination. Although the prosecution claimed a possible motive from a court dispute with the complainant, they failed to provide direct or circumstantial evidence of planning, directing, or abetting the attack. As a result, all four defendants were acquitted and discharged without being called to enter their defence.
