Investigations into former officials not political persecution – Abeiku Hayford

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General Secretary candidate, Abeiku Hayford, contends that the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) latest "Democracy Under Attack" rally was an effort by the opposition to rekindle political significance. According to Mr Hayford, the demonstration didn't signify a real danger to Ghana's democracy, asserting that the NPP's peaceful organization and participation in the event serve as proof that democratic liberties persist.

In an interview on Tamale-based Kesmi FM on Monday, August 9, Mr Hayford further stated that the NPP should concentrate on addressing the everyday concerns of Ghanaians rather than instigating what he called unwarranted political strife. He questioned the opposition's assertion that Ghana's democracy was endangered, pointing out that the protesters were granted police protection, marched through the streets, engaged with the media, and returned home safely.

Mr Hayford declared, "The simple truth that the NPP managed to hold a peaceful demonstration is, in itself, proof that democracy in Ghana remains alive and well." Despite acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to protest, Mr Hayford reiterated that the Mahama government respects peaceful assembly. He appealed to political parties to harness their platforms for national advancement rather than, in his view, creating crises to garner political interest.

"Ghanaians desire peace, stability, and progress. They expect politicians to concentrate on enhancing their lives, not manufacturing crises for political attention," he urged. The NDC official also cautioned the opposition against portraying lawful actions by state institutions as assaults on democracy. He emphasized that Ghana's democratic system remains robust and that the Mahama administration is dedicated to safeguarding citizens' rights and freedoms while ensuring that no individual is above the law.
