Injury could rule Socceroos defender out of Asian Cup

A possible Achilles injury has cast doubt on the future of Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess, potentially ruling him out of the upcoming Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. The 30-year-old, who has 29 caps for Australia, was a key member of the national team's defense during the 2022 World Cup, though he was later replaced by Lucas Herrington in the starting lineup.

Burgess played every minute of last season's gruelling English Championship campaign, totalling 4,140 minutes of action. However, he was substituted late in Swansea City's 1-0 League Cup defeat to Birmingham City, after landing awkwardly while challenging for a header and injuring his right lower leg. Birmingham City's coach Vítor Matos confirmed that Burgess was taken to the hospital for scans, with early assessments suggesting a possible Achilles injury.

If confirmed, Burgess would require a significant recovery period, likely jeopardising his participation in the Asian Cup scheduled from January 7 to February 5, 2027. The tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia. Burgess' absence would be a considerable setback for Australia's defensive lineup, particularly as he has struggled to secure a consistent starting spot since losing his initial place to 19-year-old Lucas Herrington during the World Cup.
