Injury could rule Socceroos defender out of Asian Cup

Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess may miss the upcoming Asian Cup due to a possible Achilles injury sustained while playing for Swansea City in the League Cup. The 30-year-old central defender, who has 29 caps for Australia, was a key member of the national team's defence at the 2018 World Cup but lost his starting position to Lucas Herrington during the tournament.

Burgess played every minute of the English Championship season last year, accumulating 4,140 minutes, including stoppage time, across 46 league matches. However, he was substituted late in Swansea's 1-0 League Cup defeat to Birmingham City in the 87th minute after challenging for a header and landing awkwardly, causing him to grab at his right lower leg.

Birmingham City checked on Burgess, who was taken to the hospital for scans, with no immediate assessment of the injury's severity. If Burgess has ruptured his Achilles, his absence could significantly impact Australia's defensive lineup for the Asian Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027. The tournament will feature matches against Brazil in Townsville on September 25 and Brisbane on September 29.

Burgess' potential absence follows recent injuries to other Socceroos defenders, including Harry Souttar, who is recovering from his own Achilles tear, and Jordan Bos, currently sidelined with a knee injury.
