Indian high commissioner Dinesh Trivedi meets Bangladesh PM amid diplomatic strain over Sheikh Hasina

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday amidst diplomatic tension following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's virtual address in New Delhi on August 5. The meeting occurred a day after Trivedi had a one-on-one conversation with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who also attended today's discussion.

The High Commissioner's encounter with the Foreign Minister is significant as Dhaka and New Delhi have experienced recent diplomatic friction over Hasina's public comments from India.

Hasina's virtual press interaction took place on the second anniversary of her removal after a student-led uprising in 2024, which provoked strong objections from Dhaka. In her speech, Hasina expressed her determination to return to Bangladesh in December to restore democracy, despite the potential risk of imprisonment or the death penalty. Consequently, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a strong protest and condemned the remarks, deeming the incident detrimental to public sentiment and bilateral cooperation.

Trivedi conveyed optimism regarding the upcoming meeting with Rahman, emphasizing the importance of direct engagement between the leaders of the two nations. He firmly believes that discussions between leaders can resolve issues and highlighted the mutual respect between the Bangladesh Prime Minister and Trivedi. Trivedi expressed confidence that the solution will be found positively, stating, "There is nothing negative here; everything is positive."
