India envoy meets Tarique amid Hasina tensions

Dhaka witnessed a crucial diplomatic encounter on Monday between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. This meeting occurred amidst diplomatic tension following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's virtual address in New Delhi on August 5. The address sparked strong objections from Dhaka, which resulted in a strong protest from Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting is significant as it comes a day after Trivedi held a one-on-one session with Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. The High Commissioner's meeting with Tarique Rahman is especially important as Dhaka and New Delhi have recently experienced diplomatic friction over Hasina's public remarks from India.

The meeting took place a day after Hasina's address, which was part of a second-anniversary commemoration of her ouster from power in 2024. During her speech, Hasina expressed her determination to return to Bangladesh by December to restore democracy, despite acknowledging the potential consequences of imprisonment or a death sentence. Bangladesh's government strongly condemned Hasina's statement, citing the negative impact on public sentiment and bilateral cooperation efforts.

Trivedi, during his interaction with reporters in Dhaka, expressed optimism about the meeting with Tarique Rahman and emphasized the importance of direct engagement between the leaders of the two countries. He expressed confidence in the unity between the two nations and their ability to resolve problems through dialogue. Trivedi also praised Tarique Rahman, calling him a people's person and noting that his Prime Minister shares the same sentiment.
