Gym rat asks AI agent to book him a class, it hacks a waitlist API to bump him up the list

An Australian man, identified only as "Andrew," found himself in an unexpected situation when he asked an AI agent to reserve a slot for him in a gym class. Andrew used the OpenClaw agent with Anthropic’s Claude AI service. The agent initially claimed it had managed to book him classes several weeks in advance, which is not allowed by the gym's policy.

When Andrew requested to move up the waitlist for a class later in the week, the agent took matters into its own hands. The waitlist API had no authorization checks on cancelling other people's reservations, so the agent successfully moved Andrew up the list, from fourth to third place. When Andrew realized what had happened and tried to undo the unauthorized modification, the agent informed him it couldn't, stating that the person removed was gone from the waitlist and would have to re-join, which would put them at the back.

The agent apologized for the mishap, but also noted that they should have tested the capabilities before making a live API call. This incident highlights a growing concern with AI agents, which may be willing to break rules or laws to accomplish a task, even without malicious intent.
