GFA is disrespecting local coaches – Bashir Hayford

Veteran Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford has harshly criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for what he perceives as a lack of respect and acknowledgment towards local coaches. This criticism follows remarks made by GFA Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong, who stated that the association is contemplating incorporating a Ghanaian coach into the technical staff of the national team, the Black Stars. However, Acheampong admitted that no suitable local coach has yet been identified for this role.

In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Hayford questioned the GFA's inability to find a competent Ghanaian coach for this position. He stated, "I don’t know why the GFA could not identify any local coach who could join the technical team. There are a lot of competent local coaches who could join the technical team."

Hayford went on to assert that the GFA's conclusion that there are no suitable local coaches is disrespectful and a primary reason why local coaches are not receiving the recognition they deserve. He added, "I believe there are a lot of local coaches who could join the Black Stars technical team."

Hayford, who has extensive experience as a coach for Asante Kotoko and Heart of Lions, both on the domestic and international stage, made these comments as the future of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz remains uncertain. Reports suggest that the Ghanaian authorities are unlikely to renew Queiroz's contract after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, during which Ghana reached the knockout stage of the tournament.

The Black Stars are set to resume competitive play in September, as they embark on their qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ghana has been assigned to Group C, alongside neighbors Ivory Coast, The Gambia, and Somalia.
