Gachagua accuses state of shielding suspects in killing of Mt Elgon MP hopeful

Narok, Kenya, Aug 10 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of protecting suspects involved in the murder of Mt Elgon parliamentary candidate Nathan Wasama. Gachagua claims that authorities ignored multiple warnings from Wasama about threats to his safety before he was killed at his home in Bungoma County.

Wasama had reported threats to the police five times, but no action was taken. Gachagua alleged that the person who threatened Wasama remains free and believes he is protected by senior officials. He accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of deploying police Land Cruisers to guard the suspect instead of arresting him.

The killing of Wasama, a former councillor and businessman, has raised security concerns in Mt Elgon, especially after a failed assassination attempt in 2024. Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has called for a thorough investigation, urging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to find those responsible. Gachagua vowed to personally visit Mt Elgon to demand justice for Wasama and vowed to prosecute alleged killers if he becomes president in 2027.
