From lockdown feeding to saving 2,000+ animals: Varsha Raj’s story

When silence spread across Patna during the coronavirus lockdown, thousands of street animals depended on humans for their daily meals. This prompted Varsha Raj, the founder of the APNA Foundation, to take action beyond mere sorrow. Alongside Ashish Ranjan, the organisation has rescued over 2,000 animals and operates Patna's first dedicated animal shelter home.

Varsha has always had a deep connection with animals, nurturing them from a young age. Her family, instilling compassion and sensitivity, encouraged her passion, which took her beyond a career in medicine or music. During the lockdown, Varsha and her team began providing food to street animals and later addressed injured dogs and cows' treatment. The mission became a priority over her studies and career, supported by her family and volunteers.

Initially, the organisation faced financial challenges, relying on tuition, small music performances, and donations from individuals. Today, they receive support through social media and strive to maintain the shelter and medical care for the animals. They have successfully arranged the adoption of over 500 animals. The APNA Foundation currently houses 34 permanent dogs, a cow, and feeds more than 100 street dogs daily.

Upon rescue, the team provides treatment, rehabilitation, and safe shelter. They aim to change society's perception of street animals, encouraging adoption of Indian-breed animals instead of foreign breeds. Varsha's dream is to establish a modern animal hospital and sanctuary, emphasizing courage and patience in their noble cause.
