First Rival Android App Store Arrives In the US Play Store

Aptoide has emerged as the first independent Android app store accessible through Google Play in the United States, following a legal ruling by a judge in 2024 that mandated the Play Store to permit third-party storefronts, according to The Verge. This development significantly simplifies the discovery and installation process for alternative app stores, potentially paving the way for competitors such as Epic, Amazon, Samsung, Microsoft, and others to offer their own app stores via Google's platform.

While third-party app stores have been present on Android, traditionally they were confined to pre-installed options like the Amazon Appstore on Fire tablets or Samsung's Galaxy Store, or acquired through sideloading. The inclusion of rival storefronts within the Play Store now makes them more readily accessible to users. Aptoide, though relatively unknown, is expected to be the first of many alternative app stores, with Epic's own store likely to follow suit, along with Amazon, Samsung, and other manufacturers hoping to attract potential customers.
