Dodgers’ Late-Season Slide Complicates MLB’s Salary Cap Push

Their once-impressive 14-game lead in the National League West has now been reduced to just 7.5 games.

The Dodgers have lost three consecutive series for the first time since September 2025, and overall, they are 21-21 in their last 42 games—a quarter of the regular season. Star player Shohei Ohtani has not pitched in over a month. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledges the need for adjustments but maintains that the team is still strong.

While the Dodgers have not been mentioned in specific labor proposals, their financial situation has contributed to the broader push for a salary cap and changes to MLB's reserve system. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed the desire for competitive balance, but some argue that the league is already more competitive than ever.

Former player Anthony Rizzo agrees, stating that the current state of competitiveness is the best it has ever been. The primary goal for management is to make a deep postseason run and win the World Series, something the Dodgers have not achieved in recent years. The last World Series champion with a below-average payroll was the 2017 Astros, which had significant controversy surrounding them.

The last small-market team to win the World Series was the 2015 Royals. As long as the Dodgers remain a top contender, the league's competitiveness and the push for a salary cap will remain a topic of discussion.
