Chris Evans Teases ‘Brutal’ Captain America Arc in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Chris Evans has warned fans that Captain America's story in the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" will be a "brutal" arc. During a Q&A panel at Fan Expo Boston, the actor described how the Russo Brothers, who are directing the film, love to physically challenge Steve Rogers as part of their approach to storytelling. Evans explained that for the Russo Brothers, it's the beating that makes a hero – a character who takes countless punches and still manages to rise.

The actor also provided insight into the secrecy surrounding his role in the film. To prevent leaks, every reference to Evans' character in the production was disguised as a different Marvel hero. The script called him Luke Cage, the production assistants referred to him by the same name, and even the call sheets and set terminology masked his actual identity.

This elaborate ruse aimed to protect the surprise reveal of Evans joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again as Steve Rogers. Last seen in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," Captain America had returned the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines and decided to remain in the past with Peggy Carter. In 2024, Evans made a brief return to the MCU in "Deadpool and Wolverine," reprising his role as Johnny Storm from the early 2000s Fantastic Four films. "Avengers: Doomsday" is set to release in theaters on December 18.
