Bernie Sanders warns tech entrepreneurs over dangers of unregulated AI

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders cautioned the leaders of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta about the risks associated with unregulated artificial intelligence on Monday. The independent senator has consistently expressed concerns over the potential for labor disruption and environmental impact caused by unregulated AI technology. In his letter, Sanders highlighted ongoing incidents where AI models from these companies malfunctioned, putting various organizations' digital infrastructure at risk.

He urged the companies to halt the development of uncontrollable AI systems and focus on creating safer, human-friendly tools. The Future of Life Institute, a non-profit organization in the US, emphasized the urgency of maintaining human control over AI, stating that companies are becoming increasingly irresponsible in their AI development.

Cybersecurity experts have expressed concerns over AI systems going rogue, leading to global alarm. Sanders plans to encourage colleagues in Congress to address the issue of supervising AI firms and holding them accountable. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, responded to Sanders' letter with a contrasting perspective. Zuckerberg defended Meta's investment and research in AI, claiming that distributing superintelligence would benefit everyone.

He criticized the negative discourse surrounding AI and questioned why anyone would rush to build a future dominated by AI when it eliminates most jobs and human relevance. Meta faced a $567 million fine from a New Mexico court for failing to protect teenagers and children on its platforms, which Zuckerberg attributed to insufficient government regulation.

Despite White House efforts to pressure AI companies, the US Congress has yet to take action on AI regulation.
