Authorities ID the officer who fatally shot a Black man on a bike in Madison, Wisconsin

Madison police officer Kiel Baitinger-Peterson, a white officer with 11 years of experience, fatally shot 38-year-old Black man Corey Ruiz on July 22. The incident, captured on video, sparked protests and concerns over racial justice in Wisconsin's capital city. Baitinger-Peterson was among four officers who approached Ruiz, who was cycling, in response to reports of potential burglaries.

The shooting prompted the state's Department of Justice to release Baitinger-Peterson's name, with the investigation ongoing. No body camera footage exists as Madison police officers do not wear them. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Ruiz's family, has called for charges against the officer.
