At least 13 killed in Ukrainian strike on Russia's Tatarstan region, officials say

At least 13 individuals lost their lives in a Ukrainian drone strike targeting Russia's Tatarstan region, according to officials. Amidst the tragedy, a child was among the victims, while 75 others sustained injuries, according to Russian authorities. This incident marks one of the deadliest single attacks on Russia since the onset of the country's full-scale war with Ukraine. The target of the attack remains unclear, but Nizhnekamsk, a city roughly 1,100 kilometres away from Ukraine's border, was reportedly hit.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk was the point of impact, while Ukrainian defence technology manufacturer FirePoint attributed the strike to its FP-1 drones. The assault persisted for hours, beginning overnight and extending into the morning, as per local sources. Unverified images circulating on social media depict towering columns of smoke and flames illuminating the sky during daylight hours, accompanied by the sound of air raid sirens.

Russia's Investigative Committee disclosed that civilian individuals, not participating in any military operations, were present during the strike. Moscow has affirmed that the attack targeted both industrial facilities and residential areas. Tatarstan's Head of State, Rustam Minnikhanov, conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased, expressing deep sorrow over the incident. A period of mourning has been declared in Tatarstan in light of the tragedy.

Ukraine's defence forces have previously targeted oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk on June 12. Furthermore, over 450 Ukrainian drones were reportedly shot down by Russia's air defences overnight, according to Moscow. Despite recent Ukrainian successes in conducting long-range strikes on Russia, primarily aimed at warehouses and energy infrastructure, civilian casualties continue to rise.

Russia, in response, persists in carrying out large-scale aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities and residential areas. Notably, a combined drone and missile strike on Kyiv last week resulted in the death of 21 people, while a Russian artillery attack claimed the lives of five individuals near the front line in Kharkiv in the previous night.
