African quartet secure Women’s World Cup places

The 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil has been secured by an African quartet of teams - Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon and Malawi. The Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon), held in Morocco, served as a qualifying tournament for the upcoming World Cup, with semi-finalists earning their places. Algeria defeated Ivory Coast 2-1, with goals from Ines Khiri and Amira Ould Braham, after N'Sira Oudraogo was sent off.

Morocco secured their place with a 2-1 win over South Africa, thanks to goals from Sakina Ouzraoui Diki and Hanane Ait El Haj. Cameroon beat Nigeria 1-0, thanks to a spectacular 30-yard free-kick from 19-year-old Myriam Nyadjou. Malawi, ranked 153rd in the world, shocked the world by beating Ghana 2-1, coming from behind to score two goals.

The Wafcon semi-finals will be held on Wednesday, with Morocco facing Cameroon and Algeria playing Malawi. The four teams that lost in the Wafcon quarter-finals - Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa - still have a chance to qualify for the World Cup through the 10-nation intercontinental play-offs in November and December.

The 2027 World Cup, which runs from June 24 to July 25, will feature 32 nations, out of which 18 qualifiers have been confirmed so far. So far, Africa has secured its four spots with Algeria, Cameroon, Malawi and Morocco qualifying.
