2027: PDP, ADC, NDC, Others To Hold Opposition Unity Summit

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a group called the G100 has announced plans for an opposition unity summit. The group has been holding talks with six opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party, and Social Democratic Party.

These consultations involved key leaders, presidential candidates, and running mates from the involved parties. This effort aims to bring the opposition parties together for more effective collaboration. The summit is scheduled for August 18, 2026, in Abuja. The G100 stressed that the consultations are confidential and conducted away from public scrutiny due to their sensitive nature.

Achieving a strong opposition requires sacrifice, compromise, and prioritizing national interests over individual or partisan considerations, according to the group. The consultations followed an open letter issued to opposition leaders on August 2, 2026, which presented the "Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition." This doctrine emphasizes the importance of a credible opposition in a democracy.

The G100 acknowledged that turning goodwill into a working political arrangement will be challenging. The next step will involve discussing practical ways to cooperate, such as making sacrifices, accommodating each other, and taking collective action. The group's role is to facilitate dialogue and build trust among the parties, not to dictate the outcome.

The initiative aligns with the principles of the Ibadan Declaration, which calls for the opposition to develop a unified and competitive alternative in 2027. The G100 stated that achieving sustainable cooperation requires negotiations and ownership by the parties involved, not imposition. They emphasized the need for patience, courage, and sacrifice in the upcoming political process.
