20,000 evacuees fled ferocious B.C. wildfire. These are some of their stories

On a weekend in B.C., a wildfire swept through Summerland, prompting over 20,000 evacuations. The event left many people recounting harrowing experiences. One evacuee, Dayna Joynt, was preparing a birthday cake for her granddaughter when the fire arrived. She was apprehended by police for obstructing them and was pepper sprayed, eventually managing to leave with her family.

Kyla Gaudiuso received a photograph of the ridge in Faulder, where her home once stood; the entire ridge was consumed by flames. Erin Carlson, whose family runs a fruit company, shared that 30 workers were evacuated by helicopter as everything else was destroyed. Anette Boulet, witnessing the destruction first hand, described the fire as "doomsday".

Greg Krauter, with his herd of goats, was evacuated but found his home unscathed. Dawn Wertz, who had celebrated her niece's birthday earlier, was on her way to Penticton when she witnessed the fire.
