Would’ve banned him: Srinath’s take as match referee on Ganguly making Waugh wait

Former fast bowler Javagal Srinath, who played in the 2001 Test series between India and Australia as an injured player, opined that if he had been the match referee, Sourav Ganguly would have been banned for making captain Steve Waugh wait at the toss. Srinath, now an ICC match referee, made these remarks at an event in Chennai.

Ganguly, still a young captain at the time, was known for delaying the toss, a practice that aggrieved Waugh. Despite this, India went on to win the series 4-1, marking a significant turning point for the team and the sport after a match-fixing scandal in the late 1990s. Srinath recalled that post the scandal, the team showed resilience and a resolve to prove cricket's integrity, leading to consecutive wins both at home and abroad.
