World number one Sinner to miss Cincinnati Open

Jannik Sinner, the current world number one, will miss the upcoming Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury, but remains optimistic about competing at the US Open later in the month. The 24-year-old Italian claimed his fifth Grand Slam singles title by defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final last month, but has not played since then.

Sinner consulted with his doctors and team before making the difficult decision to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. He explained that his right knee has been causing him discomfort, and despite the efforts of his medical team, he is not yet ready to compete. Sinner expressed his disappointment at not being able to participate in Cincinnati but stated that he is eagerly preparing for the US Open.

The Cincinnati Open main draw is scheduled to commence on August 13, with the final taking place on August 23. Other notable players participating in the event include Zverev and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, who won the 2025 edition of the Cincinnati Open, was leading 5-0 in the final against Sinner before the Italian had to withdraw due to illness.

However, Alcaraz, 23, will not be present to defend his title as he has been absent since the Barcelona Open in April due to a wrist injury. The US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, will take place in New York from August 30 to September 13.
