Ukraine and Russia exchange attacks as Kyiv buys new ATACMS

Overnight, drone and missile strikes in Ukraine and Russia resulted in casualties and injuries on both sides. In Belgorod, Russia, five people perished and 25 sustained injuries after several apartment buildings were hit. The city serves as a crucial logistics center for Russian operations in Kharkiv and the Donbass region. Russian officials claimed to have downed over 150 Ukrainian drones the previous night and reported attacks on Black Sea ports, including Novorossiysk, which houses vital Russian oil export facilities.

Russian forces also targeted oil refineries in Sumy and Odesa, where at least eight individuals were injured. Odesa, a significant agricultural export hub for Ukraine, also faced the brunt of the attacks.

Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces claimed to have taken control of two villages in Donetsk, though this assertion could not be independently confirmed. Kyiv, facing a shortage of defensive weapons, has been attempting to acquire more medium and long-range systems from the US. However, progress has been limited. In a bid to bolster its arsenal, Ukraine has turned to Turkey for assistance, with the US reportedly depleting its own stockpiles due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

On Sunday, Ukraine's military news outlet announced the purchase of 70 ATACMS and 12 M270 multiple-launch rocket systems, along with over 2,500 227mm rockets equipped with cluster-munitions payloads, from Turkey. The total estimated value of the deal is $283 million (€245 million). The ATACMS systems, although of an older design with a range of 165 kilometers (102.5 miles), are expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
