Turkey Confirms Key Detail About Makkah Defense Agreement

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has affirmed that the defense accord among Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia mirrors NATO's Article 5 mutual defense pact, while emphasizing that the agreement is not directed at Iran. Addressing state-run Anadolu news outlet, Fidan revealed the three nations had agreed to mutually support each other's security.

He stated the allies would deliberate to ascertain the nature, extent, and format of aid should any member suffer an attack. Fidan disclosed that Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia had spent two years and eight months to finalize the deal. He hinted the pact may eventually broaden to incorporate other regional nations. He said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed to broaden the alliance beyond the three founding members, naming Egypt as a prospective future participant when the countries resolve certain technical matters.

Fidan disclosed the alliance would set up a ministerial committee akin to NATO's framework and establish a general secretariat in Saudi Arabia. He added that the inaugural committee meeting would decide the alliance's operational protocols. Fidan further stated Turkey should join any international coalition formed to safeguard Red Sea shipping against Houthi assaults, arguing that maritime security directly impacts Turkish interests.
