This scrapped Apple Upgrade feature would’ve made setup much more seamless

Apple once contemplated a feature for their Upgrade service that would have automated the setup process for iPhones, according to recent reports. This feature, dubbed the "white-glove" component, would have had Apple preloading new devices with users' data from their iCloud backups, making the transition to a new phone nearly effortless.

However, this idea was ultimately abandoned, likely due to concerns over privacy and the potential for data to be outdated by a few days. The concept was first reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. While Apple introduced a similar 'Presto' system at their stores a few years ago, allowing employees to update iPhones in the box, it is believed that expanding this system to handle iCloud backup transfers would have required human intervention to access the data.
