Surbhi Jyoti says normal delivery is ‘very normal’ today; doctor explains when it’s the right choice

Actress Surbhi Jyoti recently shared her thoughts on normal delivery in a recent Instagram Live session. When asked about the practice in today's world, the Qubool Hai star replied, "Why not? I mean, what's the problem in today's world? I know a lot of people in my circle who have had a normal delivery in today's world. So, it has nothing to do with the zamana actually. It happens, it's very normal."

Dr. Meghana Reddy Jetty, a Senior Consultant at Aster Women & Children Bangalore, clarified that the choice between normal delivery and Caesarean delivery depends on the safest delivery for both the mother and the child in a particular pregnancy and childbirth scenario. Normal delivery is generally recommended when there are no complicating factors, as it reduces the risk of infection, less bleeding, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, and quicker return to daily activities.

Additionally, some argue that vaginal delivery benefits infants by exposing them to the mother's bacteria, which aids in their immune system development.

However, Dr. Jetty notes that in cases such as placenta previa, fatal distress, certain breech positions, previous Caesarean deliveries, and obstructed labor, a Caesarean delivery is a better choice and may even be lifesaving. She warns against delaying the procedure in hopes of achieving a natural delivery, as it could put the lives of both the mother and the baby at risk.

Dr. Jetty emphasizes that the primary goal of maternity care is the safety of both the mother and the unborn baby, and an informed decision based on medical evidence is the best course of action.
