'Every Athlete's Dream': India's CWG 2026 Medallists Excited To Meet PM Modi After Historic 39-Medal Haul

India's athletes who secured a remarkable 39 medals, including 13 golds, at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow are thrilled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as "every athlete's dream." Despite competing in a pared-down programme that omitted medal-rich sports like wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and shooting, India finished fourth in the medal tally.

Seema Kaliraman, who earned a bronze in the women's discus throw, expressed her excitement, saying, "Every athlete dreams of having such an experience. Our Prime Minister supports athletes in every possible way and encourages us in all aspects. He also keeps checking on us from time to time and asks how things are going. As soon as we won the medal, he congratulated us as well."

Para-athletics shone brightly in Glasgow, with Soman Rana claiming India's first-ever gold in the Men's Shot Put F57 event and Shubham Juyal completing a one-two finish with a silver. Rana expressed his motivation and pride after meeting the Prime Minister, while Shubham emphasized the special nature of the encounter, given the limited opportunities most athletes have to meet their country's leader.

Weightlifting contributed eight medals, including Mirabai Chanu's historic gold in the women's 48kg event, while athletics delivered 10 medals, with Gulveer Singh becoming the first Indian to win two individual medals in a single Commonwealth Games.
