Summerland BC fire videos: Latest update as wildfire wreaks destruction in Canada; ‘they have lost everything’

A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Bald Range fire, has devastated parts of British Columbia’s Okanagan region, prompting thousands to evacuate their homes and destroying numerous structures. Flames and smoke from the blaze have been widely shared on social media, capturing the intense nature of the emergency.

On Friday and Saturday, the fire rapidly expanded, leading British Columbia to declare a provincial state of emergency and issuing evacuation orders for over 20,000 people. The fire has scorched roughly 9,500 hectares (23,500 acres) as of Saturday, making it exceptionally intense and challenging for firefighting efforts. Flames were reportedly generating their own lightning, creating hazardous conditions for both firefighters and residents.

Summerland and Peachland, two communities in the affected region, saw residents flee to nearby cities like Kelowna and Penticton. The fire also caused power outages and prompted Summerland to issue a boil-water advisory, adding stress to the displaced population. Highway 97, a major route in the Okanagan, was impacted by the fire, with authorities working to maintain safety for residents and emergency crews.

As evacuation orders expanded, videos of the fire’s devastation circulated online, evoking emotional responses from viewers. Some users praised the resilience of Canadians and criticized those denying the reality of global warming, while others questioned the federal government’s response to the crisis. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the emergency, expressing gratitude to firefighters and first responders while emphasizing the federal government’s readiness to support British Columbia’s efforts.

Around 1,500 firefighters are currently battling over 100 active wildfires across the province, with hot and dry conditions continuing to raise the risk of further fire spread.
