Seven Huambo Municipalities to Join Angola’s Public Electricity Grid

Seven municipalities in Angola's Huambo province will soon be connected to the national public electricity grid, according to the provincial government. The interconnection work is 80% complete and will link Alto Hama, Londuimbali, Longonjo, Chinjenje, Ucuma, Ecunha and Mungo to the Rede Eléctrica Nacional. This is part of a larger electrification effort in Huambo, which includes a US$60 million project covering six localities with substations and household connections.

The seven municipalities joining the grid will join others like Huambo city, Caála, Bailundo and Calenga that are already connected, expanding coverage on the Central Plateau. The Huambo region is already part of Angola's interconnected northern-central grid, with plans for a 400 kV Huambo–Lubango transmission line financed by the African Development Bank.

This line, completed in 2019, aims to move low-cost hydropower southward and reduce reliance on diesel generators in southern provinces. The financing for the power sector includes World Bank funding, contributions from France, the AfDB, and a Chinese loan. These connections represent an accelerated push for grid access in Huambo, benefiting over 400,000 inhabitants and transitioning from isolated diesel generation to stable electricity supply for businesses, agricultural production, healthcare, and education.
