RG Kar case: Bengal Health Department announces separate probe 2 years on

On Sunday, the Bengal Health Department announced plans for a separate investigation into the 2021 RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, marking the second anniversary of the incident. Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay stated that the department would summon all individuals present at the hospital on the night of the crime, as well as the victim's teachers and professors.

The inquiry will also investigate any shortcomings or loopholes in the hospital's internal security and administrative framework, with findings reported to the Central Bureau of Investigation. Asfaqullah Naiya, a member of the Abhaya Mancha, expressed disappointment with the lack of transparency from the state government, demanding proper justice for the victim.

The original investigation was conducted by Kolkata Police, who arrested Sanjay Roy for the crime, but the case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which named him as the sole accused. A life sentence was later imposed on Roy, but dissatisfaction with the investigation led to a fresh inquiry by the CBI, causing the court to express frustration over its direction.
