Revanth Reddy set for ‘Varuna Yagam’, Opposition targets Congress over ‘farm distress’

On August 10, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will perform a 'Varuna Yagam' at the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam to seek abundant rains for the state. After the ceremony, the Chief Minister will also take part in a concluding offering event. The state has been facing a monsoon season that began in June at a 61% rainfall deficit. Although the monsoon arrived in July, it still left Telangana with a 5% cumulative rainfall deficit over the past two months.

Opposition parties, including the BJP and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), have been criticizing the Congress government for several issues related to agriculture, such as financial assistance, free power supply, and the distribution of fertilizers. The BRS has also been opposing the creation of a separate Farmers' Power Distribution Company, fearing it would disrupt the 24-hour free electricity supply provided to the agriculture sector.

On the other hand, the BJP has been urging the state government to implement the central PM Fasal Bima Yojana scheme to help farmers deal with natural calamities. While several farmers' rights groups, like the Rythu Swarajya Vedika, have been opposing the government's plans to acquire land for "Future City" and "Pharma City" township projects, they are not against the 'Varuna Yagam' itself.
