Qatar-Oman Relations: A strong legacy and a promising future

The fraternal relations between Qatar and Oman, known since the early 1970s, are rooted in a rich historical legacy and strengthened by shared values of faith, language, and destiny. The modern relationship was formalized when Qatar appointed its first ambassador to Oman in 1973, followed by Oman's ambassador to Qatar in 1974. High-level visits, including those of the Amir of Qatar and the Sultan of Oman, have marked significant milestones in this evolving relationship.

Political coordination between the two countries is characterized by stability and depth. As members of the Gulf Cooperation Council since its establishment in 1981, Qatar and Oman are committed to enhancing collective action within the Gulf framework and beyond. They regularly engage in consultations to address regional issues, such as tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, and support collective action on major Arab and Islamic issues, like the Palestinian cause.

Bilateral trade between Qatar and Oman has seen steady growth, reaching approximately OMR 1.113 billion in 2023. Qatari investments in Oman have increased by 12% by the end of 2023, totaling OMR 730 million. Conversely, hundreds of Omani companies operate in Qatar, contributing to a thriving economic partnership. The relationship also extends to cultural, educational, and social cooperation, with exchanges in art, music, theatre, publishing, and heritage preservation.

Joint committees, such as the Qatar-Oman Joint Committee, have played a crucial role in identifying opportunities and developing joint investment projects in various sectors, including agriculture, energy, communications, transport, tourism, education, and banking. This practical partnership has transformed diplomatic coordination into a tangible cooperation, driving regional cohesion and integration for the benefit of the peoples in the Gulf.
