President Zardari reaffirms Pakistan’s commitment to protecting Indigenous peoples’ rights

President Asif Ali Zardari stressed Pakistan's dedication to safeguarding the rights, cultures, traditions, and well-being of Indigenous peoples on Sunday, marking the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9. In his message, Zardari emphasized the importance of preserving Indigenous knowledge, which has been instrumental in sustaining cultural traditions, environmental understanding, and health practices.

He highlighted Pakistan's diverse cultural landscape, recognizing communities like the Kalash and those inhabiting the northern mountains, whose languages, customs, and knowledge systems have enriched the nation's heritage for generations. The president underscored that Pakistan's Constitution guarantees equality, protecting individuals with distinct languages, scripts, or cultures.

He celebrated the theme for this year, "Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being," acknowledging the pivotal role of Indigenous midwives in preserving traditional knowledge and ensuring the health and well-being of mothers, newborns, and families, especially in remote areas where healthcare access can be limited.

Zardari affirmed Pakistan's ratification of key international conventions in 2005 and 2022, underscoring the nation's commitment to cultural diversity and the preservation of living traditions. He reiterated Pakistan's support for initiatives that respect Indigenous knowledge, amplify their voices, and provide communities with the opportunities and services necessary for living with dignity and security.
