PH’s biggest problem is the economy and great expectations

Malaysia's Pakatan Harapan (PH) government faces two major challenges: an unfavorable economic environment and a perceived loss of moral distinctiveness. Voters judge incumbents based on their economic performance rather than their policies. Rising inflation, higher interest rates, and slower growth have led to anti-incumbent sentiment worldwide, including in Malaysia.

Despite structural economic constraints inherited from previous administrations, PH has been criticized for failing to improve living standards despite making economically responsible decisions. The government's focus on moral and institutional renewal contrasts with the daily struggles of Malaysian families. PH's reputation for being distinct from previous administrations has been eroded by perceived compromises and controversies surrounding key figures.

The coalition's diminishing moral authority is further compounded by the erosion of the Reformasi movement's credibility. While PH may be making progress on paper, voters are more concerned with immediate economic conditions and daily financial pressures rather than long-term fiscal policies. The challenges of improving economic conditions and preserving PH's moral distinctiveness make it difficult for the government to maintain support through electoral means alone.
