Over 200 firefighters battle blaze in southern France

On Sunday, a fast-moving wildfire raged in southern France, prompting evacuations as over 200 firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. The fire ignited around 12:45 pm near the Lozere region, approximately 140km northwest of Montpellier. While the exact cause remains unclear, it might have been sparked by a vehicle accident on a local road.

By late afternoon, the fire had ravaged around 153 hectares (370 acres) of land and continued to spread. A team of 270 firefighters from Lozere and neighboring departments joined forces, bolstered by four Canadair water bombers and two Dash aircraft. The combined efforts of these brave firefighters managed to safeguard two homes that were directly threatened.

Efforts were concentrated on the fire's head, which remained inaccessible. The fire service spokesman stated that the flanks were being held firm, and the primary focus shifted to extinguishing the fire's core. As a precautionary measure, two hamlets in the municipality of La Tieule, situated directly in the fire's path, were evacuated at around 5 pm, displacing approximately 20 residents.

The area is characterized by extensive woodland and is experiencing an unprecedented drought. Marc Toulouse, a senior fire officer in Lozere, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that it was unlike anything experienced in recent memory. French authorities are currently assessing the damage caused by a series of fires, with the worst being the largest wildfire since 1949 in the southwest Gironde region.
