Osun Election: Politicians’ complaints led to CP’s removal — IG

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, announced the removal of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan in Osun State ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. Disu made this decision following complaints from politicians about their lack of trust in the current police commissioner. This move came after consultations with political stakeholders who voiced their concerns regarding the confidence they placed in Gotan.

In response to these issues, the police introduced the position of an Electoral Commissioner of Police to oversee election security. The new officer took charge of operations earlier than expected, following the decision to remove Gotan. Other senior police officers with specific responsibilities for the election will also be deployed to Osun.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police and the AIG in charge of election will be moving in shortly, ensuring adequate security measures are in place. Disu assured that the police would work alongside other security agencies to maintain law and order during the poll. Concerns over potential violence were addressed, with the police already deploying teams across the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The Osun governorship election will see incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party contesting against the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
