Osun Election: Politicians’ complaints led to CP’s removal — IG

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, announced on Sunday that the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, was removed from his position due to complaints from politicians ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. Disu revealed this during a press briefing that quickly gained traction on social media platform X. He disclosed that the removal came after discussions with political stakeholders who voiced concerns about their confidence in the state police commissioner.

To address these issues, Disu highlighted the introduction of a new position - the Electoral Commissioner of Police - who would oversee election security prior to the poll. This move was made in response to the politicians' growing distrust in the Commissioner of Police. Disu explained that the regular Commissioner of Police was asked to step aside while the new Electoral Commissioner of Police took charge earlier than initially planned.

Besides the Electoral Commissioner of Police, other senior police officers with specific responsibilities for the election will also be deployed to Osun. The Assistant Inspector General in charge of elections and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, responsible for coordinating the state elections, will be moving in promptly. Disu emphasized that these officers have been given clear instructions to ensure the security of the polling process.

He stated, "We, the police, are the lead organization in charge of internal security for this election."

Disu assured the public that the Police would collaborate with other security agencies to maintain law and order during the election. Concerns over potential violence were addressed, with Disu confirming that police teams are already in place across the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order, ensuring a peaceful voting environment for the citizens.

The election between incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, known as Ambo, will determine the next leadership of Osun State.
