MP Ndindi Nyoro fence-sitting gamble as Mt Kenya shifts ahead of 2027

On June 27, 2026, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro held a press conference in Nairobi and vowed to announce his political allegiance by July 25, 2026, after disassociating himself from the ruling UDA. However, two weeks later, he had not made any progress in declaring his stance. This indecisiveness may lead to a crisis that could damage his promising political career, which previously flourished during his 13-year tenure in electoral politics.

Nyoro argued that he needed time to reflect on his decision, fearing that jumping into a political formation without a concrete plan would be a repetition of his previous mistake. He also admitted to being out of the country when the Finance Bill 2026 was voted through, though he later realized that this was not a sufficient explanation.

Additionally, Nyoro had been tasked with declaring his position on the October 2024 impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President, although he stated that he was against the impeachment and had tried to dissuade the government from it. He expressed that he is no longer inspired by the government's agenda but remains uncertain about his future political path.

Despite most of his Young Turks colleagues shifting their support towards opposing President Ruto in the 2027 re-election, Nyoro has yet to fulfill his self-imposed deadline. Political scientist Felix Wangwe believes that Nyoro's uncertainty stems from being entangled in conflicting interests. He emphasizes that in politics, individuals prioritize financial gains or threats over personal convictions.

Nyoro's acceptance within the Mountain region seems to hinge on whether he can appeal to the local voters before considering a national platform. His opposition in Kiharu, led by his last election opponent, Karanja Mburu, is growing, with other political figures from Murang'a County aligning with Gachagua and the opposition. The Communications Authority board chairman and candidate against Nyoro, Charles Karondo, has also declared his intention to challenge him on the UDA ticket.

With only the Governor, Senator, MP, and Woman Representative positions remaining in Kiharu, Nyoro has yet to declare his position, leaving the political landscape uncertain.
