‘Millennials are not punk kids anymore’ — Ocasio-Cortez sees a ‘generational tidal wave’ driven by anger over economic futures sidelined by boomers

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has claimed that a new political wave is emerging, driven by millennials who are no longer the "punk kids" of old and are galvanized by their frustration with the economic future their predecessors have set. In an interview, Ocasio-Cortez said that millennials are now formidable voters, who feel ignored and sidelined by older generations.

She highlighted the recent rise in the number of millennials voting, now making up 25% of the electorate, up from 23% in 2020. Baby boomers, on the other hand, are becoming less influential, with their share of voters falling from 36% in 2016 to 32% in 2024. Ocasio-Cortez expects millennials to take the lead in shaping American politics, citing their practical concerns such as the economy, climate change, and the housing market.

While acknowledging that some past millennial rhetoric was too extreme, she stressed that their current approach is more moderate. The influence of millennial voters is expected to be tested in the upcoming November elections, where generational divides and party affiliations will play key roles.
