Melaka seat talks crucial for BN-PN pact, says analyst

Negotiations between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) on contested seats for the upcoming Melaka state election are crucial for their informal alliance, according to political analyst Mazlan Ali. With BN planning to contest all 21 of its seats, failure to reach a compromise could have repercussions for the alliance's future in other regions, such as Kelantan and Terengganu, where BN suffered losses in the 2022 general election.

If the two coalitions cannot find common ground, the state assembly may see a three-way contest involving BN, PN, and Pakatan Harapan. PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party is not concerned by BN's intentions to defend its 21 seats, but emphasized the importance of amicable resolution of any disputes. BN holds the upper hand in seat negotiations due to its parliamentary seats in Jasin, Tanggabaru, and Masjid Tanah, while PN secured two seats through PAS.

While BN plans to defend its 21 seats, other seats may be contested by PN, with seven seats considered sufficient for the party in a state of 28 constituencies. Analyst Azmi Hassan believes both sides can find common ground and avoid a fight that could benefit Pakatan Harapan.
