Machogu signals Magara as his man for 2027 Kisii Governor race

Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has hinted at a potential political partnership with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Omingo Magara as he campaigns to become Kisii Governor in the 2027 General Election. This suggestion was made during a fundraiser at Nyamarambe Catholic Church, where Machogu also vowed to tackle what he called "goonism," a growing concern for political and security issues in the county.

Although Machogu did not officially name Magara as his running mate, his strong endorsement of the former South Mugirango MP MP has fueled speculation that they could form a team to challenge incumbent Governor Simba Arati. Machogu highlighted Magara's experience, credibility, and shared vision for Kisii, stating that they must unite leaders with the best interests of the people in mind.

The political landscape for the 2027 gubernatorial race is intensifying, with opposition leaders exploring alliances to avoid vote splitting against the incumbent. Senator Richard Onyonka, who is interested in the governor's seat, has reportedly consulted Machogu, Magara, and Dr Enock Ondari on the possibility of selecting a single candidate to challenge Arati.

Magara, who previously expressed interest in the governorship, opted to contest the Senate seat in 2022. During the fundraiser, Machogu condemned political violence and harassment of residents, vowing to restore security and dignity in Kisii town if elected. Several high-profile aspirants have already entered the race, including Governor Simba Arati, who seeks a second term, Machogu, Senator Onyonka, Dr Enock Ondari, and Gideon Nyandiricha.

The emerging partnerships, such as the potential alliance between Machogu and Magara, are expected to reshape the gubernatorial contest as parties settle on candidates and negotiate alliances.
