Lekki residents groan as 2-week blackout sends fuel spending soaring

Residents of Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos have been enduring nearly two weeks of darkness due to a transformer fault, leading many to rely on generators and face soaring fuel expenses. The electricity outage has impacted Alhaji Hakeem Odumosu Street and other areas within the high-density residential and commercial district on Lagos Island.

Local residents expressed frustration, stating that the lack of clear communication from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has worsened their situation. Despite multiple promises, power has yet to be restored, causing financial burdens, spoiled food, and disrupted businesses. An EKEDC official revealed that the company is working towards restoring electricity supply during the following week, but the delay has amplified concerns over the reliability of Lagos' electricity supply.

The repeated outages contribute to a pattern of disruptions affecting EKEDC's network, reminiscent of a scheduled three-day power outage in March aimed at network upgrades. This ongoing struggle highlights the critical need for improved electricity infrastructure in Lagos, a city with one of Nigeria's largest electricity demands.
