Jaissle begins Newcastle rebuild with Valencia win

Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle United's new coach, marked his debut with a 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Valencia at Mestalla Stadium on Sunday. The German manager faced an early setback when Filip Ugrinic scored for Valencia within four minutes. However, substitute Yoane Wissa responded with two goals in the second half to secure the victory for his young team.

Jaissle emphasized that the team's journey is still in its early stages, noting that they are "quite balanced" and aware of their focus. He remained optimistic about the impact of the players being given a chance, including Anthony Elanga, who was stretchered off after a challenge from Valencia's Jose Gaya, who received a red card. Jaissle expressed relief that Elanga's injury appeared to be minor, hoping for a swift return to the lineup.

The appointment of Jaissle came after the departure of Eddie Howe, and he has inherited a squad in transition following the exits of key players Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon. To address this, Jaissle has turned to youth, with goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, midfielder Aladji Bamba, winger Bazoumana Toure, and 18-year-old Sean Steur debuting for the team. Steur, in particular, impressed off the bench during the match.
