Jaissle begins Newcastle rebuild with Valencia win

Matthias Jaissle takes charge of Newcastle United's rebuilding process after a 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Valencia. The German manager inherited a team in transition following departures of key players Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon. Jaissle's first match in charge saw Valencia take an early lead through Filip Ugrinic, but Newcastle's Yoane Wissa scored twice in the second half to secure the win.

Jaissle urged his team to remain focused and balanced during pre-season, acknowledging the journey ahead. Injury concerns were raised for recently signed Anthony Elanga, who was stretchered off following a challenge from Valencia's Jose Gaya, who received a red card. However, Jaissle expressed optimism about Elanga's condition, stating that the medical team showed positive signs.

Jaissle, appointed on Wednesday, emphasized the importance of patience and support for the young players, including goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, midfielder Aladji Bamba, and winger Bazoumana Toure, as well as 18-year-old Sean Steur, who made an impact off the bench. Newcastle United's Premier League season starts on August 23 against Liverpool.
