Islamic scholars can provide better leadership than politicians – Gumi

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic scholar based in Kaduna, has asserted that Islamic scholars possess the capacity to offer superior leadership compared to professional politicians. This assertion was made during a recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service. Gumi also encouraged Islamic scholars nationwide to assume a more influential role in politics and governance.

He emphasized that there are no religious restrictions within Islam that prevent Islamic scholars from partaking in politics or assuming public office. According to Gumi, Ulama should not restrict their contributions to religious practices alone but should also engage in societal development through political leadership. He highlighted that Islamic scholars, with their profound understanding of Islamic teachings and a deep-seated fear of God, would bring stronger moral values and a heightened sense of responsibility to governance.

Gumi further argued that leaders guided by faith and moral principles would be more conscientious about fulfilling their duties to the people. He urged Islamic scholars to contemplate contesting elections and seeking appointment positions instead of ceding politics to professional politicians. Gumi contended that an increased involvement by the Ulama could enhance governance and foster accountability in public affairs.

He reiterated that political leadership should not be perceived as the exclusive responsibility of professional politicians. Instead, Islamic scholars, like other citizens, also have a vital role to play in providing leadership and contributing to societal progress.
