GOP may be stuck with Rep. Max Miller in Ohio

Rep. Max Miller, a two-term Republican from Ohio's 7th Congressional District, appears to have missed a critical Saturday withdrawal deadline, potentially leaving the district open to a Democratic pickup. This development comes as Republicans fight to maintain their narrow House majority. Miller's campaign spokesperson, Abigail Angelos, confirmed on Saturday that Miller would remain in the race despite domestic abuse allegations he denies.

A withdrawal by Miller on Saturday would have allowed the Republican committee to certify a replacement by Monday at 4 PM ET. However, Miller chose not to withdraw, thus leaving the situation unresolved. The allegations against Miller stem from domestic abuse claims filed by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, who accuses him of abuse and has sued him for defamation.

Miller denies these allegations and has also sued ex-girlfriend Stephanie Grisham over similar claims. The House Ethics Committee is currently investigating Miller's potential involvement in domestic violence and illegal drug use. Ohio Republicans have until Monday to replace Miller if he withdraws, but without his cooperation, there seems to be no practical way to fill the seat before the November election.

Democrat Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker, is Miller's Democratic opponent in the upcoming election. President Trump carried this Ohio district by significant margins in recent years, with an 11-point lead in 2024, a 10-point lead in 2020, and a 12-point lead in 2016.
