Gary Sinise Played A Stephen King Hero In This Hit '90s TV Miniseries

Gary Sinise, known for his role as Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump, played a significant part in a hit 90s TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. This four-hour-long series, consisting of four episodes, is highly regarded as one of the best Stephen King TV shows. Sinise portrayed Stu Redman, one of the first characters introduced in the show.

He was one of the few central characters to survive the deadly plague that killed over 99% of humanity and experienced spiritual regeneration throughout the story. Despite mixed reviews from critics, Sinise's performance greatly contributed to the show's popularity. Stephen King himself praised Sinise's casting, stating that he was one of the best choices for the role.

Other notable stars included Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, and Ruby Dee. Ringwald, returning to network TV after a successful movie career, found the shift to television less appealing than staying in films. Sinise himself hadn't worked much in television before The Stand but jokingly remarked that "all of a sudden, I'm doing things that people will actually see."

Prior to The Stand, Sinise had focused on theater, co-founding Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1974 and serving as its artistic director in the 80s. Before his breakout role in Forrest Gump, Sinise's most famous role was George Milton in the 1992 film adaptation of Of Mice and Men, which he also directed. While The Stand was not without its critics, its mainstream success and the performances of its cast, particularly Sinise's, ensured its lasting popularity among King's fans.

In 2020, CBS attempted to adapt The Stand again, featuring a new ending written by King, but the 1994 miniseries remains the most beloved adaptation.
