From internment camp to the art world: new biography brings Ruth Asawa to Japanese readers

A new Japanese biography brings the life of artist Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) into sharper focus for Japanese readers, nearly eight decades after the world first learned of her suspended wire sculptures. The book, "Everything She Touched: The Life of Ruth Asawa," is a translation by Hiromi Ishii of Marilyn Chase's original English work.

Art critic Ryo Sawayama, who contributed commentary to the Japanese edition, praises Asawa's ability to transform her multiple marginalized identities into turning points, using art as a means to navigate and transcend societal barriers.

Born to a farming family in California, Asawa was interned in a U.S. camp during World War II, at 16 years old. After high school, she attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where she discovered wire-weaving techniques that would define her artistic style. Despite facing racial discrimination as a second-generation Japanese American, Asawa married architect Albert Lanier in 1949 and went on to raise six children while continuing her artistic pursuits at home.

Sawayama notes that Asawa's works resemble "expanded drawings" more than traditional sculptures, with lines evolving into surfaces and spheres through her innovative process. Her ability to balance family life and art-making, as well as her dedication to public art and arts education, exemplify her commitment to creating an inclusive world through her craft. In Japan, Asawa remains relatively unknown, but the publication of this biography marks a significant step in introducing her legacy to a wider Japanese audience.
