Four killed in helicopter crash in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro

A helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil claimed the lives of at least four individuals on Saturday. The Colombian consul in the country confirmed that the victims included a pilot and three Colombian women, all members of the same family. They were participating in a sightseeing flight over Tijuca National Park, a sprawling forested area on the outskirts of the city.

The crash occurred near Vista Chinesa, a lookout point within the park, renowned for its proximity to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and breathtaking city views. Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere expressed his condolences to the victims' families and called for stricter oversight of helicopter flights. He even proposed a temporary suspension of such flights to allow for the implementation of new safety measures.

Cavaliere emphasized that his administration would provide full support to the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) in their efforts to enhance safety standards. The crash took place near Vista Chinesa, a popular tourist attraction within Tijuca National Park.

Diana Paez, the Colombian consul general in Rio de Janeiro, provided additional details to AFP. She revealed that the three Colombian women were family members who had traveled to the city to celebrate a young girl's 15th birthday. Due to the helicopter's seating capacity, the group of six had to split up. Unfortunately, the girl's grandmother, aunt, and cousin were among the fatalities.

Helicopter tours have gained popularity as a means for tourists to explore Rio de Janeiro and its landmarks from above. However, concerns over safety have been growing in recent years. Just six weeks prior, six people lost their lives when two helicopters collided mid-air over the western suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes.
