Food prices surge amid unprecedented heat wave

South Korea is experiencing a severe heat wave that has caused prices of agricultural goods to soar, according to industry data released on Sunday. The cost of spinach has jumped 152.3 percent over the past month, while cucumbers have risen 54.8 percent and blue lettuce 41.7 percent. Government officials say the heat wave is responsible for the price increases, as vegetables, particularly green ones, are sensitive to high temperatures and supply drops as a result.

The agriculture ministry reported that 901,602 livestock, mostly poultry, and 864,497 fish have died due to the heat wave, driving up prices. Fish prices have risen by 2.29 percent over the past week, and industry experts expect them to continue climbing in September. The government is implementing measures to curb inflation, including importing more broiler chickens and hosting discount store promotions.
