Fireworks disaster at Costa Blanca spectacular leaves 27 injured in Altea

A fireworks display in Altea, Costa Blanca, turned tragic when 27 people were injured following a pyrotechnic failure during the Castell de l’Olla event. Thousands of spectators gathered for the annual summer spectacle, which has been held for over 40 years. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, drawing around 100,000 onlookers.

Of those injured, 14 were taken to IMED Hospital, with 11 transferred to the burns unit at Alicante General University Hospital. Thirteen others received treatment at the Altea Health Centre and were released. Emergency teams managed several casualties before further transfers were arranged. Three patients were transported to other hospitals.

The Castell de l’Olla organizers issued a statement expressing regret and gratitude to emergency workers and security personnel for their response. The event's timing comes amid heightened scrutiny of pyrotechnics in Spain, particularly during the wildfire season. Fire safety concerns are growing as periods of extreme heat and dry vegetation heighten wildfire risks.

While professional displays have safety measures in place, accidents can still have severe consequences for large crowds. Animal welfare advocates have also raised concerns over the impact of loud explosions on pets and wildlife. Valencia, with its strong pyrotechnic tradition, has faced debates over restrictions on fireworks use, which can be controversial during celebrations like Las Fallas.
